Welcome to the Start Line

StartConfident is the one-stop source for those discovering the thrill of road bike racing

What? Yet another new website about bike racing?

[dropcap style=”default”]It’s true…[/dropcap]if you want to learn to fix a flat, become a better climber, calculate your FTP (don’t know your FTP from your XYZ? You’re in the right place.) or adopt a better time trial position, you can find that information on the Web.

Trouble is, the information is all over the place, from multiple sources, and each of those sources has a different point of view. Additionally, the information isn’t specifically targeted to the new —or aspiring racer. What is a budding bike racer — of any age — supposed to do? Who do you follow or believe?

[callout icon=”hb-moon-bike” animation=”scale-up”]Racing a bike isn’t the same as just riding a bike. Racing is it’s own beast, and it demands specific information, especially when it’s designed for someone who has never raced, or has only raced a few times.[/callout]

Comprehensive new racer information, presented in a straightforward way

You’ve probably already experienced the fact that racers can be, well — a snobby lot. That’s off-putting to someone brimming with desire for speed and knowledge! You don’t need jargon or a cliquish atmosphere, and StartConfident promises only to provide a frank, direct approach to the topics new racers appreciate.

StartConfident will provide new racers with information on a wide array of topics:

  • nutrition
  • training
  • technique
  • bike fit
  • repair
  • kit selection
  • the mental game
  • strategies

 …and more

Cool, but, who’s behind StartConfident?

I’m Sam Lowe. I’ve been a dedicated road rider ever since the first thing I bought with my first-ever paycheck was — a race bike. That was way back in 1985.

Since that time I’ve trained, raced, completed centuries, built, rebuilt, and painted dozens of bikes, commuted to work in multiple states, and photographed and video’d bike races.

For most of my professional career, I’ve been a content creator for companies in the healthcare marketplace. Know why that’s good for you as a new racer?

Because my day job — for nearly as long as I’ve been a rider — has demanded that I research, distill, and source only the most accurate, and referenced information. After all, the end consumers were doctors, nurses, and patients! So I know a thing or two about bringing lots of information — usually complex information — simply, and into ONE place.

I look forward to your participation here at StartConfident. I know what it’s like to want to race, while at the same time feeling lost about the right way to start. If that’s you, you’ve found a home. Welcome.

[icon_box icon=”hb-moon-bike” icon_position=”left” align=”left”] Question: As a brand new road bike racer — or as a cyclist who wants to race but hasn’t taken that first step — what kinds of topics would you like to see covered here?

Sam Lowe

I've been a road cyclist with a penchant for speed ever since my first-ever paycheck holiday. I blew the whole wad on a turquoise Schwinn Tempo with then-new Shimano 105 indexed shifting way back in 1985. I've been a voracious consumer of racing-oriented information ever since. Training, nutrition, bike fit, racing techniques, and all manner of "kit." Between nearly 30 years of riding, racing, and reading about racing, I'm ready to help you get ready to race.
