A cyclocross bike gets hosed down after a muddy race.

Mozart Does ‘Cross

The fun, the agony, the gorgeous silliness — of 'cross racing

If you've never been to a cyclocross race, oh, for heaven's sake, why not?

'Cross is exploding in the United States, and for good reasons: it extends the season for those of us who love road racing, it's easy for beginners to get involved, and every race — especially the races that feature professionals — is like a big, party in the grass. Or dirt. Or mud.

I shot this video during the Women's Category 3/4 race during Cincinnati's 3-day cyclocross event, Cincy3. The audio backdrop is Mozart's requiem. Perfect pathos. Hope you enjoy.

Sam Lowe

I've been a road cyclist with a penchant for speed ever since my first-ever paycheck holiday. I blew the whole wad on a turquoise Schwinn Tempo with then-new Shimano 105 indexed shifting way back in 1985. I've been a voracious consumer of racing-oriented information ever since. Training, nutrition, bike fit, racing techniques, and all manner of "kit." Between nearly 30 years of riding, racing, and reading about racing, I'm ready to help you get ready to race.
